Flip Book

Up until a few years ago, if someone mentioned a flip book, the image that came to mind was a small book with a few pages containing similar drawings that were only slightly different. When the pages were flipped briskly, the pictures seem to be connected and the image appeared to move. This process was what gave birth to animation. Today, there is software that simulates this effect that is used in the digital publishing industry to create electronic books and magazines.

How has flip book helped improve digital publishing? In the past, digital documents were created using word processing or desktop publishing software. If there were multiple pages, they could only be viewed by scrolling down through them all. This system was fairly efficient, but not always attractive.

Today, publications are created as PDF documents. These documents are then converted from a list of pages that is scrolled through into a book format that allows one to actually turn the electronic pages. This software animates the pages so that when one turns them they appear to move, just like printed pages.

The process makes it possible for digital publishers to produce materials that are more visually appealing and more closely resemble the printed versions of magazines and books. This is also a more user friendly format than the old method of publishing.
